investment decisions case study

technical briefing to support an investment decision

ISSUE

Our client was considering making an investment in a vaccine on the basis of Phase I trials results. Translucency was asked to confirm likely clinical applications and potential uptake and to prepare a report for the Board within one week.

APPROACH

We carried out a detailed review of the Phase I trial, including trial results. We consulted with specialist associates, and had discussions with national and regional purchasing organisations, and interviewed a sample of prescribers by telephone.

SOLUTION

Translucency presented a report to the Board setting out the potential uptake of the vaccine. Translucency recommended that our client did not invest in the vaccine as it appeared to have a limited upside and a risk of failing to have significant market penetration.

IMPACT

The Board accepted Translucency’s recommendation not to invest in the vaccine. The CEO subsequently expressed the view that our report had allowed him to avoid being pressured into making an investment by non-executive directors who had views and objectives which may not have principally been in our client’s interest and saved them a considerable amount of money.
