A drug formulary provides a shortcut for a prescriber through a large number of individual drugs and drug classes, each with their own clinical efficacy and cost-effectiveness characteristics. Formularies are designed both to cut costs and improve the quality of prescribing.
As the influence of payors increases, no product can work without local formulary approval: exclusion from a formulary will effectively lock your product out of a local market, while inclusion will greatly reduce the competition.
Formulary packs summarise the evidence for a product's costs and benefits, in a way that will be persuasive with payors. Their formats are determined by local users and vary widely. Formulary packs typically concentrate on the merits of a product relative to its competitors, rather than wider costs and benefits. However, these wider considerations may be important where they allow arguments for or against your product compared with others.
